On 13 July 2021, the UN Human Rights Council extended the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, following calls by Belarusian and international human rights organisations. Human Rights House Foundation welcomes this action, which provides for on-going scrutiny of Belarus’s human rights situation and an accessible and safe channel for Belarusian civil society to deliver diverse and up-to-date information from within the country.

Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) welcomes the adoption of a new United Nations resolution focused on civil society space, including with its requirement for the High Commissioner to report on specific challenges that civil society faces during times of crisis.

Human Rights House Foundation joins 13 other human rights, freedom of expression, media freedom, and journalists’ organisations in unreservedly condemn the arbitrary detention and judicial harassment of human rights defender and journalist Andrei Aliaksandrau, who is now facing up to 15 years in prison on baseless charges of “treason to the state”.

Правление ФДПЧ также подчеркнуло важность оказания помощи лицам, на которых отразились условия труда в ДПЧВ. Решение принято на основании результатов двух независимых оценок работы ДПЧВ и после консультаций внутри сети.

During its 22 June 2021 meeting, the Board of Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) took the decision to discontinue the membership of Human Rights House Voronezh (HRHV) in the network of Human Rights Houses due to serious Code of Conduct violations over an extended period of time. The HRHF Board also underlined the importance of helping individuals affected by the working environment in HRHV. This decision was taken on the basis of results of two independent assessments of the operations of HRHV, and following a consultative process within the network.

On 5 July 2021, Human Rights House Foundation delivered a statement to the UN Human Rights Council raising several issues including the importance of the mandate for the Special Rapporteur on Belarus, recent changes to the Criminal Code in Belarus, the situation for journalist Andrei Aleksandrov as well as Ukrainian defender Volodymyr Yavorsky.

Human Rights House Foundation joins 10 other organisations in calling for Human Rights Council member states to approach disinformation with a holistic response which embraces the right to freedom of expression, including by promoting a diverse and independent media, protecting journalists and whistle-blowers, ensuring access to information held by public bodies, and investing in media and digital literacy.
