The network of Human Rights Houses is concerned by recent actions on the part of state authorities across western and eastern Europe, the western Balkans, and the Caucasus in response to the escalating COVID-19 crisis. These actions, taken to combat the rising number of infections and deaths associated with COVID-19, raise questions about states’ commitments to civic freedoms and human rights.

Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) remains very concerned with a number of recent actions taken by the Azerbaijani authorities in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Oslo & Geneva, February 14, 2020: Following events of February 11, 2020 in Baku, Human Rights House Foundation condemns the on-going violence used by Azerbaijani authorities against peaceful protestors raising concerns about recent early Parliamentary elections as well as violence against journalists covering those protests. HRHF renews its call on the Azerbaijani authorities to end the use of violence and unlawful detention against peaceful protestors and journalists.

Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) is deeply concerned about the health of human rights defender Oktay Gulaliyev following a car crash. We call on Azerbaijani authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation.

Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) condemns the actions taken on 19 and 20 October 2019 by Azerbaijani authorities. We call upon Azerbaijani authorities to respect their international obligations and uphold fundamental rights.

In a joint statement, 54 international and Venezuelan organisations – including HRHF – raise concerns about Venezuela’s fitness to be a member of the UN Human Rights Council, calling on States at the UN General Assembly to safeguard the integrity of the Council.

Following up on excessive use of force against protestors in June in Tbilisi, Georgia, HRHF and Human Rights House Tbilisi raise concerns relating to the arrests and prosecutions following the protests, in a statement set to be delivered at the 42nd session of the UN Human Rights Council on 26 September 2019.

HRHF and Human Rights House Crimea welcome recent releases of Crimea political prisoners, while urging action to ensure all political prisoners are released, and the people who have been released are rehabilitated and their rights restored. This statement is set to be delivered as part of regular dialogue on Ukraine (item 10) at the 42nd session of the UN Human Rights Council on 24 September 2019.
