Several international and Belarusian civil society organisations including Human Rights House Foundation call on the United Nations Human Rights Council to convene a Special Session to address human rights violations committed in the lead-up, during and after the August 2020 Presidential elections in Belarus.

We, the undersigned members of the network of Human Rights Houses, urge European governments to call on the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to immediately launch an international commission of inquiry into human rights violations in Belarus in relation to the 9 August presidential elections.

In advance of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 14 August, Human Rights House Foundation calls upon the EU to send a clear and strong message to the Belarusian authoritarian president, police, and his security forces that those responsible for grave human rights abuses will be held accountable.

Human Rights House Foundation strongly condemns the widespread disproportionate use of violence on the part of the Belarusian authorities during and following the August 9 presidential election. The use of violence against peaceful protesters must end immediately and the fundamental human rights of the Belarusian people must be respected.

Human Rights House Foundation welcomes the action of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) today in adopting an important new resolution on Belarus.

On 10 July 2020, Human Rights House Foundation delivered a statement at the Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in Belarus. HRHF called for the renewal the mandate of the Special Rapporteur and that the Council insists that Belarus takes immediate remedial action to address current human rights violations and concrete steps to ensure no further escalation around the August presidential election.

On 10 July 2020, Human Rights House Foundation delivered a statement at the Human Rights Council on Freedom of Assembly and Association. The statement highlighted by authorities on peaceful protests and dissenting and opposition voices in Azerbaijan, and the violent suppression peaceful protests ahead of the Belarusian Presidential election in August.
