The use of Anti-terrorism and anti-extremism legislation as a pretext to attack those involved in human rights work in Belarus, Russia, as well as by Russian occupying authorities in Crimea was highlighted by Human Rights House Foundation in a statement at the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council on 13 March 2023.

On 13 March 2023, Human Rights House Foundation hosted “Russia’s war in Ukraine – Accountability for war crimes & serious human rights violations”, a pre-event ahead of the OSCE Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting. The event is organised with the financial support of the European Union, the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

The application deadline for this opportunity has now expired. The House-to-House Project Fund provides support for collaborative initiatives to advance human rights priorities in countries with Human Rights Houses.

Human Rights House Crimea, its members, and Human Rights House Foundation, jointly reiterate our calls for accountability for those responsible for the gross human rights violations which have taken place in temporarily occupied Crimea since 2014.

Ukrainians are fighting two battles – one against the brutal Russian invasion, and the other to defend the democratic progress the country has made since independence in 1991. Weapons are needed to win the first battle, and for the second, a victory depends on support for local democracy and civil society.

In the early weeks of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Educational Human Rights House Chernihiv (EHRHC) was damaged during an attack in the area by Russian forces. Attacks in the Chernihiv region left many injured and dead, and severe damage to the local community. Since then, and in partnership with other civil society actors, EHRHC has been working tirelessly to repair the House and to assist the healing process in the community as Russia’s military aggression continues.

On 15 December 2022, Human Rights House Foundation delivered a statement on Ukraine at the UN Human Rights Council, highlighting enforced disappearances and the situation for civil society in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On Saturday 10 December, this year’s Nobel Peace laureates received their awards at a ceremony in Oslo’s town hall. Human Rights House Foundation once again offers its sincerest congratulations to these brave human rights defenders: Center for Civil Liberties (Ukraine), Memorial (Russia) and Viasna’s Ales Bialiatski (Belarus).

At the 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) continued its work alongside the network of Human Rights Houses & other civil society partners in calling on the Council to address human rights challenges and support human rights defenders across Eastern Europe and beyond.
