Azerbaijan Bar Association Suspended Advocacy License to Afgan Mukhtarli’s Lawyer for One Year

Human Rights House Tbilisi (HRHT) and its member organizations respond to the decision of the Azerbaijan Bar Association [ABA] to suspend the license to practice law to Afgan Mukhtarli’s lawyer Nemat Karimli for one year and state that it is another clear violation of Afgan Mukhtarli’s rights alongside with the restriction of lawyer’s right to his professional activities.

Non-governmental organisations request meeting with the chief prosecutor of Georgia

On January 12, 2018, the Belakani (Azerbaijan) District court found Afgan Mukhtarli guilty in the imposed charges and sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment. Civil activist and journalist persecuted by the South Ossetia’s de-facto authority

On August 16, in Akhalgori, de-facto law enforcement officers of South Ossetia detained and have brought defamation charges against the Georgian activist and independent journalist Tamar Mearakishvili. Akhalgori municipality is located in Eastern Georgia and has been occupied by Russian armed forces in 2008, after Russian-Georgian armed conflict.

Azerbaijani Human Rights Defenders and activists in Georgia

„Solidarity to Afgan Mukhtarli! Freedom to Afgan Mukhtarli!“ representatives of Human Rights House Tbilisi and its member organizations, other human rights defenders, journalists and civil activists were holding banners with these and other slogans during the protest action in front of the Chancellery of the Government of Georgia. Part of them had polyethylene bags over the heads to protest the abduction of the Azerbaijani journalist and to express their solidarity to him.
