Azerbaijan: New Orange Revolution?

Building up to the parliamentary elections set for November, more than 20,000 people rallied through the streets of Baku last Saturday, demanding the resignation of President Ilham Aliyev and his authoritarian regime. Inspired by the same partisan symbols as in Ukraine the orange stream of demonstrators flowed into Victory Square, uniting their efforts for a free and democratic Republic of Azerbaijan. Human Rights House Network meeting in Baku

Representatives from established and emerging Human Rights Houses in ten countries are gathered in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan, 7-10 September to strengthen support to and cooperation with Azeri human rights defenders. UN Special Representative for human rights defenders, Hina Jilani, (right) will also attend the meetings, held in partnership with OSCE, ISHR and the Swedish Helsinki Committee. (06-SEP-05)

Beslan, year one

The investigation of the Beslan terrorist act is still not finished. It opened new facts which leave in doubt official facts and discredits the actions of the government. Eye witness evidence shows that there were more terrorists in the school then the Prosecutor’s facts say. Knowing this: who is responsible for arresting the rest of the terrorists, and are the proper authorities looking for them? There are a lot of questions about the Russian military using a flame-thrower. (06-SEP-05)

OSCE Croatia: refugee returns, rule of law and minority rights still wanting

The most recent OSCE status report on Croatia?s progress in meeting international commitments in the period from November 2004 until 7 July 2005, presented yesterday by the Head of the Mission, ambassador Jorge Fuentes, acknowledged Governments commitment to fulfil it?s OSCE obligations. However, the necessary reforms related to the return of the refugees, rule of law and minority rights proceeded at a lower level. (13-JUL-05)

Total Oil takes an interest in culture. Not in Burma, though

The Norwegian Burma Committee, among the NGOs in the Human Rights House in Oslo, is critical of the City Council of Stavanger, on the west coast of Norway, who welcomes Total, the French oil giant remaining the biggest Western investor in Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar), as sponsor of its huge 2008 Cultural City project. US concerned about trafficking of North Koreans

Ambassador John Miller, the Director of the State Department´s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons stated this summer that North Korea fails to comply with minimal international standards to prevent trafficking in persons across its borders. Lukashenko took over the Association of Poles in Belarus

Last Saturday, that is August 27th, Lukashenko “ultimately dissolved” the issue of Poles in the Republic of Belarus by delegalizing the Board of the Association of Poles in the Republic of Belarus (APB), which was democratically elected in March, and appointing new Association authorities, obedient towards the President.
