New complaint mechanism on violations of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights enters into force
On 5 May 2013, FIAN International celebrates the coming into force of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (OP-ICESCR). Under the Protocol, victims of violations of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR), such as the right to food, health, education, and housing, who are unable to seek relief for their claims within their own country, can seek redress at the international level by filing a complaint with the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in those countries that have ratified.
Tibet exhibition opens tomorrow
The Norwegian Tibet Committee, a member of the Human Rights House in Oslo, opens its exhibition “Tilbakeblikk hjemover/ Looking back, homewards” this Saturday in Jakob, the cultural church downtown Oslo. The multimedia exhibition will include a screening of the internationally awarded documentary “Escape”, on Tibetan children´s escape through the Himalayas. (6-FEB-04)
HRH nominates Human Rights Ambassador
In a small pre-Christmas ceremony, HRH presented Steinar Gil, Norway´s Ambassador to Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan, with the foundation´s diploma as Human Rights Ambassador of the year for 2003. Gil received the honour for his clear and courageous stance against the Azerbaijani regime´s gross violations of human rights, especially in the wake of the rigged mid-October elections. (06-JAN-04)
Ossietzky prize goes to Stavanger
The Ossietzsky prize, named after the Nobel laureate of 1936, the German pacifist and journalist Carl von Ossietzky, murdered by the Hitler regime in 1938, was awarded at the Human Rights House in Oslo today to the municipality of Stavanger, Norway. (19-NOV-03)
Reconciliation prize to Enver Djuliman of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee
The prize is awarded by “Travel for peace”, and is to be awarded each year to persons or organizations that work actively for reconciliation. Mr. Djuliman receives the prize for his good work for refugees in Norway and the Norwegian society in general, as well as for his contribution to reconciliation processes in ex-Yugoslavia.

Dalai Lama Envoys visit China
The Norwegian Tibet Committee and the Tibetan Community in Norway welcome the second visit of Dalai Lama´s envoys to the People´s Republic of China, and urge the Norwegian Government to support the negotiations between the People´s Republic of China and Tibet. (26-MAY-03)
USA, Iraq, and International Justice
USA´s ambassador for war crimes has suggested that people who committed war crimes during the Saddam Hussein era be tried in Iraqi courts. In a letter to the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs the Norwegian Helsinki Committee argues that these courts will not be independent and impartial, and that Norway and other countries should strive to establish an international tribunal for Iraqi war crimes. “Conflicting perceptions” – New Report on Macedonia
A new report from the Norwegian Helsinki Committee describes the human rights development in FYR Macedonia since 2001, when a treaty was signed to strengthen the rights of the Albanian minority and contribute to the modernization of the country. (23-APR-03)
Justice in post-War Iraq
