As space for civil society is shrinking, the Human Rights House values of solidarity and cooperation in networks are more important than ever. Our annual report for 2016 shows how these values – and the resilience, bravery and creativity of those in the Human Rights Houses – ensured that 2016 was not just a year in which freedoms declined globally, but also a year of significant innovation, growth, and ongoing activity by the Human Rights Houses and wider civil society.

We were able to respond to many of the worrying regional and international trends in 2016, adapting our working methods, refocusing and mobilising resources, and launching new initiatives.

Through the stories, experiences, and work featured in our annual report, we hope to energise and inspire, trigger debate and ideas, and encourage others to join us in our work.

Among many successes, we celebrate the release of many of our colleagues from prison in Azerbaijan, our role in contributing to strong international human rights standards for the protection of human rights lawyers, and the strength, impact, and diversity of the projects among and within the Human Rights Houses, as well as those led by HRHF.
