Human rights in Belarus: defenders’ opinion

On 4 March in Vilnius HRH Belarusian human rights defenders presented their vision of the human rights situation in contemporary Republic of Belarus. Fitted into ten written pages it will be included into Universal Periodic Review, which Republic of Belarus as a UN member has to go through in May this year. Representatives of embassies, journalists and everyone interested had a chance to hear out Belarusians.

HRH Sarajevo urges BH authorities to accept the UPR Recommendations

Human Rights House of Sarajevo – HRH Sarajevo, in its letter addressed to the Minister of the Human Rights and Refugees in B&H, Safet Halilovic and to the President of the Council of Ministers of B&H, Nikola Spiric, in behalf of the Informal NGO Coalition for the UPR, expressed the satisfaction over the results and the interactive dialogue during the UPR session of B&H held in late February 2010.

Victim of sexual abuse during the August war in Georgia appeals to the ECHR

On the International Women’s Day the Human Rights Priority and the Caucasian Women’s Network filed a strategic litigation to the ECHR on the case of sexual abuse against a Georgian woman during the August war. The case versus Georgia and Russian Federation.

Film screening: Murder at the Dawn of Spring

Belarusian Human Rights House and JuBIC are hosting a screening of a new documentary by Volha Nikalaichyk, followed by a discussion with the film director. “Murder at the Dawn of Spring” (2010) recalls a suicide committed by human rights defender Yana Paliakova on 7 March 2009 in Salihorsk, Republic of Belarus.

On December 14, 2010, a one day international conference entitled ‘War on Terror and Human Rights – In Search for Truth and Responsibility’ was held at the Warsaw University Law Faculty premises. The conference was organized by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR) in Warsaw under the auspices of the Dean of the Law Faculty of Warsaw University.

2 March 2010 marks the fifth anniversary of the unsolved murder of Monitor editor-in-chief Elmar Huseynov, who was fatally gunned down in his apartment building in a well-organised attack. ARTICLE 19 calls on the Azerbaijani government to redouble its efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice, and to take immediate action to improve freedom of expression in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
