Article 19 welcomes the request for summonses made by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a significant step towards justice for victims of the 2007-2008 post-election violence in the Republic of Kenya. Public opinion’s surveys indicate that the ICC process enjoys overwhelming public support locally.

End of “liberalization” in Belarus

Board Meeting of the Center
On the 23rd of December, 2010 Russian Research Center for Human Rights will hold a Board Meeting with the aim to consider an application of a newly registered trans-regional organization Center of Caucasian Initiative with the request to integrate the organization into the Center.
NGOs call on immediate release of the journalists and human rights defenders in Belarus
Numerous human rights organizations, including the Human Rights House Foundation, addressed Belarusian President Lukashenka with a letter, condemning the brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters, detentions and battery of journalists, human rights defenders and opposition candidates during the 19 December post-election rally in Minsk.
Uyghur journalist said to get life sentence
A Uyghur journalist working for an official Chinese radio service has been sentenced to life in prison following a secret trial conducted earlier this year. Memetjan Abdulla, an editor for the Uyghur service of the People´s Republic of China National Radio, was sentenced in April in a closed trial in Urumqi, capital of China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
Iranian film director sentenced to 6 years in prison and banned from making films for 20 years
Iranian film director Jafar Panahi was sentenced this week to six years in prison and 20 years’ ban from making films, writing any type of screen play, and traveling abroad. Index on Censorship calls on Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani, head of the judiciary in Islamic Republic of Iran, to overturn the sentences handed down to the film directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof.
HR organisations express concern with ineffective implementation of PACE resolution on N. Caucasus
International and Russian human rights organizations, including Human Rights Center Memorial, the Civil Rights Defenders and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee have sent a letter to the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe expressing concern with the lack of effective implementation of its resolution 1738 (2010) on Legal remedies for human rights defenders in North Caucasus.

Polish protests against election-related violations in Belarus
The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR) is concerned about the post-election situation in the Republic of Belarus. In a statement issued today, the Foundation protests against the massive violations of human rights by Belarusian officials related to the presidential elections held yesterday, 19 December 2010.

The Human Rights House Network strongly condemns the arrests of the demonstrators, opposition politicians, journalists and human rights defenders and disproportionate use of violence against them in the aftermath of the 19 December presidential election in the Republic of Belarus. More than 600 people were arrested and hundreds were injured.
