In Vitsiebsk people are detained for protesting
On 22 June representatives of oppositional political parties gathered in Freedom Square in Vitsiebsk to protest against the verdict to two leaders of the Belarusian opposition Paviel Sieviaryniets and Mikola Statkievich. 40 minutes after it started the action participants were dispersed by the police and riot squad.
Azerbaijan: Slain journalist’s wife discontent over investigation
Four months have passed since the killing of the controversial editor-in-chief of opposition-minded Monitor journal. Prominent Azeri journalist Elmar Huseynov was gunned down at the entrance of his apartment on March 2. Monitor was a Russian language weekly magazine covering the activity of prominent politicians in the country. The journal published investigative pieces exposing official corruption, mismanagement and crime in different fields of economics and politics. (2-JUL-2005)
The School of Human Rights for Youth
Tenth in a row „ School of Human Rights for Youth“, organized by the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, was completed this week in Bozava, Dugi otok. Altogether 19 high school students, coming from different regions in Republic of Croatia , took an active part in the one-week school programme, designed to provide basic information on human rights. Tragedy of the Chechen refugees
On the 3rd of June 2005, at around 15:00, military personnel from OMON led an unauthorized operation to detain suspects who helped militants in the Chechen Region of stanitsa Borozdinovskaya. They blew up the houses of local inhabitants, made the men sit in cars and took them to the local school. The Soldiers made people lay face down on the ground and pulled their shirts over their heads. Military personnel beat everybody, even teenagers, elderly people and handicapped, on their feet and with the butt of their guns. Soldiers kept people in the rain till late evening. At 21:00 Military personnel took eleven people, who have still not been found. (30-JUNE-05)
Publisher of Den newspaper can’t change its juridical address
The registration and licensing department of Minsk City Executive Committee refused to register the changes made to the registration documents of the Dzienpres company that publishes the newspaper Den. The changes concern the new legal address that has been provided by the House of Republic of Poland in Minsk.
Russian NGOs are being oppressed by authorities
The Ministry of Justice slowed down the activity of the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society and its partner organization Nizhniy Novgorod Human Rights Society. Russian NGOs are always being watched by Russian authorities, in particular those who criticize the government. Russian authorities try to find any reason to close those organizations that have their own opinion, because they see them as a threat. (27-JUNE-05)
The new ECRI report on Poland!
On 14 June, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) published its third report on Republic of Poland. The report covers the situation in the Republic of Poland between the year 2000 and 17 December 2004. (24-JUNE-05)
Declaration on Srebrenica didn’t adopted yet
Serbian Authorities didn’t adopted the Declaration on Srebrenica which is made by eight Serbian NGO`s. Members the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia refused to adopt the Declaration if it’s not include the other crimes wich had happened during the war in nineteen’s, and especially crimes against Serbs in the Republic of Croatia.
