Tenth in a row „ School of Human Rights for Youth“, organized by the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, was completed this week in Bozava, Dugi otok. Altogether 19 high school students, coming from different regions in Croatia , took an active part in the one-week school programme, designed to provide basic information on human rights. The school is a part of a wider regional project which, so far, introduced more than 1500 young people from Macedonia, Croatia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro with documents and mechanisms related to protection of human rights as well as obstacles that prevent their full respect.

Being an intensive one-week course, a school is composed of lectures and various workshops that, apart from human rights, embrace issues like peaceful conflict resolution, democratic values, problems related to sex and gender, stereotypes and prejudices, social distribution of wealth and other similar topics. Furthermore, aiming to inspire young people for their future engagement in the field of human rights, they are offered an opportunity to develop their own projects through the workshop „My first project“. Based on the participative models, all of the workshops are highly interactive, enabling young people to participate fully in the discussions and encouraging them to give their own opinion.

The Croatian Helsinki Committee has been organizing schools of human rights for youth since 2001 with long-term financial support from the Norwegian Helsinki Committee.
