EU states reject Croatia’s accession talks

EU states have rejected a Commission recommendation to set an end-2009 target date for completing Croatia’s accession talks. These remain at an early stage and thus the proposed target was ambitious. Yet the refusal to adopt it underlines the raft of challenges still facing Croatia—and not all of them are in Croatia’s power to solve.

President Kibaki urged not to sign draconian media bill into law

Reporters without Borders has written to Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki urging him not to sign the Republic of Kenya Communications (Amendment) Bill 2008 into law. Otherwise known as the ICT Bill, that was adopted by parliament on 10 December 2008.

ARTICLE 19 calls for an end to arbitrariness and impunity in Eritrea

As the world celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19 called for an end to arbitrariness and impunity in State of Eritrea especially of the many Eritrean journalists and political opponents in detention without charges for more than seven (7) years. State of Eritrea has the highest number of jailed and exiled journalists in Africa.

Eritrea: a call to end impunity

State of Eritrea has the highest number of jailed and exiled journalists in Africa. As the world marked the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ARTICLE 19 called for an end to the persecution of journalists, drawing attention to the government’s poor treatment of the country’s media workers.

NHC files complaint to UN

The Norwegian Helsinki Committee has filed a complaint to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding actions taken by the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) in Kyrgyz Republic against the NHC Regional Representative, Ivar Dale.

10 снежня былі падведзеныя вынікі конкурсу на найлепшую фатаграфію, якая ілюструе ажыццяўленне якога заўгодна права ці свабоды чалавека ў Беларусі. Конкурс быў арганізаваны Беларускім Домам правоў чалавека і прысвечаны 60-годдзю з дня прыняцця Усеагульнай дэкларацыі правоў чалавека.

First community home in Macedonia

Last week in Skopje the first ever community based home for people with disabilities in FYR Macedonia was opened. Home is major step toward ending social exclusion of people with disabilities. The community home will be operated by Polio Plus, a Macedonian NGO, with funding from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy and the Open Society Mental Health Initiative.
