Brazil: Price for freedom of expression

Blogger and journalism student Emílio Moreno da Silva Neto, 33, from Brazil, was ordered by a Ceará state judge to pay R$16,000 (approx. US$9,200) in damages due to a comment posted on his blog. Another journalist, Pamela Martin, was caught in gunfire when working on a report about illegal fishing.

Situation in Eastern Burma ‘comparable to Darfur’

A new report shows that conditions in Eastern Burma are now comparable to those of the war-torn Darfur region in Western Republic of the Sudan. As a result of the systematic violations of human rights by the Burmese Military Junta, at least 75.000 people became refugees and more than half a million were internally displaced in the last year.

Kandic, Terselic and Tokaca, Schwarzkopf Europe Prize Winners

Vesna Terselic, the Leader of Documenta from Zagreb, Mirsad Tokaca, the Director of the Research and Documentation Centre from Sarajevo, and Natasa Kandic, the Executive Director of the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) from Belgrade were awarded the annual Schwarzkopf Europe Prize this year.

Statement of the Human Rights House Tbilisi and the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders

Members of the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders and the Human Rights House Tbilisi are alarmed by the information that representatives of Adjara Autonomous Republic Division of Special Operative Department (SOD) within the Ministry of Interior of Georgia have attempted to exert pressure and blackmail Tedo Jorbenadze, the head of the investigative reporting team of the “Batumelebi” Newspaper. We call upon the Georgian authorities to promptly investigate this and previous incidents of pressure on “Batumelebi” and take all appropriate measures to ensure safe and enabling environment for all journalists in Georgia.

Amnesty: Switzerland votes against religious freedom

Amnesty International said it deeply regrets the choice of Swiss voters on Sunday to introduce a ban on the construction of minarets into the constitution. The ban, which takes immediate effect, violates the freedom of religion of Muslims living in the country.
