9th International Film Festival WATCH DOCS

Warsaw’s 9th annual International Film Festival WATCH DOCS took place from 4 to 13 December 2009. The festival competition offered the Warsaw premieres of the world’s top documentary films broadly related to issues of human rights. This year’s competition included 19 films vying for the WATCH DOCS festival Award.

CERD: consideration on Reports of Poland

Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination presented on 28 August 2009 Consideration of 17, 18 and 19 th Reports submitted by Republic of Poland. The Reports were submitted on 19 February 2008 under article 9 of International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination.

UN official praises Norwegian PEN for saving an Afghan journalist

In an interview in the Norwegian daily Dagbladet, the UN’s special representative in Islamic Republic of Afghanistan discloses some of the secrecy that has characterized the case of Afghan journalist Sayed Pervez Kambakhsh, right, his release and travel to Scandinavia. Credit is also given to Norwegian PEN and its Vice President Elisabeth Eide for contributing positively to solving this case.

Sahara activist wins her battle to return home

Aminatou Haidar’s protest against Morocco’s refusal to allow her to return home had mobilized the world powers to solve the crisis. International pressure had apparently forced Rabat to allow her to return to Laayoun, where she had been refused entry in mid-November. “This is a triumph, a victory for … human rights, international justice and the Saharan cause,” Haidar said.

Human Rights Alliance awarded prizes

On 9 December in Minsk the human rights award was announced. Human Rights Alliance, registered in Lithuania, annually gives out the prize. Two out of three laureates are alumni of the Human Rights House Network educational program.

Documentary screening about the Belarusian-Lithuanian borderland

15 December Vilnius HRH hosted a presentation of a short documentary Borderland. The film was made with the assistance of BelSat TV crew. The idea was developed by United Centre of Initiatives for Republic of Belarus (JuBIC), a partner-organisation of HRH Foundation.

Alternative Reports of Macedonian NGOs

As part of a project activity of the First Children’s Embassy in the World – Megjashi, published the Alternative Reports of NGOs on the occasion of the Second Periodical State Report to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the initial reports on the Optional Protocols, are prepared by the National Alliance for Children’s Rights – Republic of Macedonia.

9 снежня у Менску прайшло ўручэнне штогадовай прэміі у галіне правоў чалавека. Прэмія заснаваная зарэгістраванай у Літве арганізацыяй “Праваабарончы альянс”. Двое з трох лаўрэатаў сёлетняй прэміі – выпускнікі адукацыйнага праекта сеткі Дамоў правоў чалавека.

Abductions of Belarusian activists condemned

Members of the Human Rights House Network are alarmed by recent reports of abductions of youth activists in the Republic of Belarus. These incidents appear to be a new and intimidating tool for harassment of Belarusian activists, who in an organised manner or independently demonstrate their opposition to the rule of the government of Republic of Belarus.
