Iran: one year after elections – importance of internet and small media

The twelfth of June is the anniversary of the disputed Iranian presidential election. The ensuing events of last summer challenged assumptions about the political impact of the media, especially the internet, on Iranian society. Mahmood Enayat is a doctoral student at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, presents his thoughts about the role of internet in Islamic Republic of Iran today.

There will be demonstrations and campaigns around the world for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on 19 June. In Bergen, the community of people from Burma in Bergen, the Rafto Foundation and Amnesty International Region Vest invite to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 65th birthday ceremony.

Recovering after disaster: Poland voting, Belarusians observing

A mission of more than 30 Belarusian, Lithuanian and Swedish young election observers are heading for Republic of Poland for this weekend. The monitors are going to observe the quality of election as Poles are voting for a new Head of State after the death of President Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash in the Russian Federation.

Armenia under scrutiny at the UN for its human rights situation

The UN human rights apparatus is looking into Armenia’s human rights situation from several angles: after its Universal Periodic Review in May, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders is currently visiting Republic of Armenia. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention is planning a similar visit, and the UN Committee Against Torture will soon review the country.

Two Tibetan environmentalists in detention since August 2009

According to Human Rights Watch, two Tibetan environmentalists, Jigme Namgyal and Rinchen Samdrup, have been in detention in Tibet since August 2009. Karma Samdrup, a prominent Tibetan environmental philanthropist, one of China’s leading collectors of Tibetan art, and founder of the award-winning Three Rivers Environmental Protection group, was seeking his brothers’ release and was himself arrested on January 3, 2010.

ART. 193-1: Criminal prosecution for NGO’s activities in Belarus

On 10 June, the Assembly of Pro-Democratic NGOs of Republic of Belarus, together with the Belarusian Human Rights House in Vilnius, held a briefing “Art. 193-1: Criminal Prosecution for NGOs’ Activity in Belarus”. The event took place several hours before the start of IV Regional Congress of NGOs, which gathered representatives of Central and Eastern Europe,
Caucasus and Baltic States in Vilnius.

New Law On Electronic Communications in MK threat to citizens’ privacy

Recently proposed new Law on Electronic Communications, brought up many negative reactions coming both, from civic and from political sector in the Republic of Macedonia, calling it a threat to citizens’ privacy and attempt of the government to create a police state.
