On 15 June, the European Parliament (EP) adopted a vital resolution on the enforced disappearance of Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Mukhtarli from Georgia. HRHF welcomes this swift response, which occurred as HRHF delivered a statement at the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) calling for action on the deteriorating situation in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Mukhtarli suddenly went missing in Tbilisi, Georgia, on the night of 29 May, leaving his relatives and colleagues without news until the next day, when he was able to contact his lawyer from the State Border Service İnvestigation Unit in Azerbaijan.

Some 25 human rights organisations call on Interpol to act with due diligence to prevent the misuse of Interpol alerts against Azerbaijani human rights defenders Leyla and Arif Yunus.

An international conference titled “Activists under Attack. Defending the Right to be a Human Rights Defender” is to be arranged in Oslo, Norway, on 13-14 October 2004. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Human Rights House Network will host the conference.(24-MAY-04)
 
 

The combination of gross humiliation and violence that we have been witnessing these last weeks – the torture in the prisons of Iraq, military actions against civilians in Iraq and the demolishing of lives and homes in Gaza, represent severe and destructive attacks on human rights and human dignity, says Ms Nora Sveaass at the International Society for Health and Human RIghts (21-MAY-04).
 

During the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, mosques, churches and other cultural items were among the targets of warfare. The Herzegovinian city Stolac experienced almost complete destruction of its Bosniak cultural heritage. The Norwegian Helsinki Committee is a co-operating partner in a project  that arranges an international conference in Sarajevo 23-24 April 2004 and will publish a report focussing on the Stolac case. The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights is organizing its second Travelling Festival devoted to the presentation of documentary films on the subject of human rights. From 31.03 until 02.04 the Festival was held in Bialystok, the largest city of NE Republic of Poland. (05-APR-04)
  

Kurdish Human Rights Project (KHRP) is to assist Leyla Zana and three other imprisoned former Democracy Party (DEP) parliamentarians in taking cases to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), following the decision of Turkish courts today to confirm their fifteen year prison sentences.
