Norway is a member of the UN Security Council from 2001 to 2003, and is President in March. Fourteen Norwegian human rights NGO’s have made a number of recommendations to the Norwegian Foreign Minister, Mr. Jan Petersen, on a number of issues of vital importance to international peace and security. Approximately 60 human rights defenders from Helsinki Committees in the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Europe and North America attended the General Assembly Meeting of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF) in Zagreb on 15-18 November. Among the topics discussed was the problem of protecting human rights in the context of the threat of terrorism and the “war against terrorism”. (20 November 2001)
