Croatia: ongoing impunity for war crimes

Amnesty International (AI) is concerned about the ongoing impunity for war crimes in Croatia and calls on authorities to investigate and prosecute all cases committed during the 1991-1995 war in Croatia. Witnesses, who could provide necessary evidence through their testimonies, are reluctant to do so due to ongoing threats and intimidation against them. The victims and their relatives are left without access to justice and reparation.

Ghulja Massacre in China: fourteen years after

Fourteen years ago on 5 February 1997 hundreds of Uyghurs were killed or imprisoned after participating in a peaceful demonstration in the city of Ghulja in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), China. No-one has been held accountable for the brutal crackdown on the non-violent protest, persecution of Uyghurs continues rebranded as part of the international “war on terror”.

Somaliland editor sentenced to 3 years in prison

Mohamud Abdi Jama, the editor of the independent private newspaper Waheen in the semi-autonomous republic of Somaliland, sentenced to three years term in prison and was given a fine of 6 million Somaliland shillings (around 900 dollars) in connection with a story alleging public corruption. International human rights organizations condemn regional court’s decision.

Moroccan report confirms killing of 352 “disappeared” Saharawis

The Royal Advisory Council for Human Rights (CCDH) of Morocco in a unique report confirms the killing of 352 “disappeared” Saharawis from 1958 to 1992. Out of these, over 200 died in military bases and secret detention centres, including children. Saharawis demand an international court to look into the case.

Norway: release political prisoners in Belarus!

15 Norwegian organisations and political parties in Oslo appealed to the Norwegian authorities to increase their pressure on Republic of Belarus and demand release of all arested after the preisdential elections on 19 December. Around 35-40 persons in front of the Norwegian Parliament demonstrated in support of human rights defenders and political prisoners in the Republic of Belarus.

In Norway, one ‘illegal’ immigrant’s case stands for thousands

Amnesty International Norway and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee react strongly against the arrest and planned deportation of Maria Amelie, 25-years-old, whose parents left Caucasus when she was still a child. Maria Amelie has chosen to show a paperless face through her book and various appearances in the Norwegian society. Now she stands in danger of being deported.

Haiti one year after earthquake: fear of cholera epidemic and sexual violence

From January 12 to October 31, 2010, MSF medical teams in Haiti treated more than 358,000 people, performed more than 16,500 surgeries, and delivered more than 15,000 babies, new MSF review’s numbers show. Today one of the main issues on the island is the cholera epidemic and sexual attacks on women, the newest Amnesty International report says.

NGOs call on immediate release of the journalists and human rights defenders in Belarus

Numerous human rights organizations, including the Human Rights House Foundation, addressed Belarusian President Lukashenka with a letter, condemning the brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters, detentions and battery of journalists, human rights defenders and opposition candidates during the 19 December post-election rally in Minsk.
