Georgian journalist Komakhidze fears for his life
Head of Studio “Reporter”, journalist Vakhtang Komakhidze requests the Government of Switzerland political asylum because he fears for his own and his familys life. His wife reports to the Interpress news that her husband has received several threatening phone calls where his family members were threatened with death. Currently, Komakhidze is in Geneva, in a refugee asylum.
Life threats against a leading Georgian journalist
The South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (a joint programme of the World Organisation Against Torture – OMCT and the International Federation for Human Rights – FIDH), Human Rights House Foundation, Norwegian Helsinki Committee, Front Line and ARTICLE 19 condemn the pressure and intimidation exerted by Georgian authorities against leading investigative journalist Vakhtang Komakhidze, and denounce a continuous defamation campaign against Mr. Komakhidze.

ECHR Recognized Rights of Repressed People on Getting Compensation from Georgian State
According to the judgment of the European Court for Human Rights, Georgia shall introduce amendments to the law which was declared to be obligatory in 1997. The case deals with the citizens who were victims of Stalin’s repressions in 1937 and in fact it is precedential. European Court passed verdict against Georgia in the case “Kiladzes VS Georgia” and imposed the state to pay compensation to the victimized families.
Journalist beaten up and illegally obstructed from carrying out professional activities
On January 22, 2010 journalist Saba Tsitsikashvili, regional correspondent of Human Rights Center and the editor of a regional newspaper “Kartlis Khma” (Voice of Kartli) was subjected to abuse and harassment by regional security guards in Shida Kartli. The guards abused Tsitsikashvili physically and verbally and obstructed him from carrying out his professional activities.

On January 26, 2010, the Human Rights Centre organized a press conference on the fact of physical assault of the HRIDC’s regional coordinator Saba Tsitsikashvili, right, by the security guard of the Shida Kartli Regional Administration. The incident occurred on January 22 when the journalist visited the regional administration to get the public information he had requested several days before.
