The presentation of the book of A.Tamkovich “Contemporary History in Faces”
The Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House has the honor to invite you to the presentation of the book of the Belarusian journalist Aliaksandr Tamkovich “Contemporary History in Faces”. The book tells the stories of 70 the most outstanding people known in Belarus and beyond who over the past 15-20 years have been directly involved into the recent Belarusian history. The presentation will be held on 14 January at 15:00, in the Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House (Vilnius,Latako g. 3).
Death convict’s mother asks to change law that prohibits returning her the son’s body
The mother of the executed Aliaksandr Hrunou, petitions the President, both Houses of Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Government asking the officials to propose the Constitutional Court to amend the Criminal Executive Code, which prohibits returning the body of the executed person and disclosing the places of their burial.
Yury Rubtsou – the new political prisoner
Homel activist Yury Rubtsou (right), who was convicted of insulting the judge, will serve his sentence in open-type correctional facility No. 7 in the village of Kuplin, Pruzhany district. Previously, co-chair of the organizing committee of the party Belarusian Christian Democracy Pavel Seviarynets served his sentence at the same place. Rubtsou was charged with a crime under Article 391 of the Penal Code – insult of a judge.
Political prisoner Eduard Lobau released
Political prisoner Eduard Lobau has been released from Ivatsevichy penal colony No. 22 at about 8 a.m on 18 December. He was met by his family, journalists and supporters with the words “Long Live Belarus!”.
The death penalty, political persecution, preventive detention – Human Rights Day in Belarus
On the eve of Human Rights Day – on 9 December, Vilnius hosted a discussion with Belarusian and Lithuanian human rights defenders, civic activists and relatives of political prisoners, as well as an opening of photo exhibition dedicated to the death penalty in Belarus.
UN Human Rights Committee has made a public statement about the death of Aliaksandr Hrunou
UN Human Rights Committee on condemned the violation of Belarus’s international legal obligations through the execution of Aliaksandr Hrunou whose case was considered by the HRC at the time. HRC requested Belarusian authorities to suspend the execution of the sentence until the consideration of the case, but the sentence was carried out, and now the case will be considered, despite the fact that the applicant had already been shot.

Rights Day will take place on 9 December at 14:00 at the European Information Office of the Seimas (Seimas Building 3, Gedimino av. 53). The language of the event will be Russian and English with the translation to Lithuanian.
UN Human Rights Committee recognizes that Belarus violated the rights of Ales Bialiatski
On 24 October 2014 the UN Human Rights Committee took a historic decision on the case of of Ales Bialiatski, President of Human Rights Centre “Viasna” and FIDH Vice President, officially recognizing that the Republic of Belarus violated his right to liberty and security, the right to justice and a fair trial ad the freedom of association of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
Belarusian human rights defenders fight against the death penalty via the UN Human Rights Committee
United Nations Human Rights Committee found that Belarus violated the right to life of Vasil Yuzepchuk, who was shot in 2010. The case of Aliaksandr Hrunou, another citizen of Belarus, who was executed, is still pending before the UN Human Rights Committee, while human rights defenders appealed to the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.
