Shirin Ebadi to Oslo in October

Shirin Ebadi will attend a conference in Oslo 13 October hosted by the Human Rights House Foundation. The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate will talk about the importance of networks in strengthening the security of human rights defenders. Ebadi will also discuss the possibility of establishing a Human Rights House in Islamic Republic of Iran. (30-AUG-04)

Minsk Shops Are Ordered Not to Sell Independent Press

In Minsk a number of large shops refused to sell leading non-governmental newspapers, such as “Belorusskiy Rynok”, “Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta” (“BDG”), “Belorusskaya Gazeta” and “Narodnaya Volia”. The owners of some shops didn’t even notify the editors while cancelling the distribution agreements. (26-AUG-04)

Russian civil rights groups see threat in Putin oversight

Azerbaijan urges the Russian Federation to strive for Garabagh hotbed settlement

The Upper Garabagh conflict was in the focus of Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov´s meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow last Wednesday. Lavrov said following the meeting that “Russia is interested in a peace settlement of the Upper Garabagh conflict, but the problem will be resolved only if the parties come to terms”. Aliyev warns of dangers posed by Armenian secessionism

Republic of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev said Wednesday the breakaway ethnic Armenian province Nargorno Karabach would have to remain a part of  his country and warned against the dangers of secessionism, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.  (28 August 2004)

OSCE holds seminar on fighting human trafficking

The necessity and effectiveness of close co-operation in the fight against human trafficking was emphasized by participants at a one-day seminar held on 26 August by the OSCE Office in Baku.The event is aimed at increasing the overall understanding of the positivebenefits of cooperation between state authorities and non-governmentalorganizations (NGOs) in the implementation of a comprehensive NationalAction Plan (NAP) against human trafficking, which was adopted by Republic of Azerbaijan in May of this year. New Norwegian Human Rights House opened by Norwegian Prime Minister

The Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik attended the official opening of the new Norwegian Human Rights House in Oslo yesterday. In his speech he stressed that co-locating human rights organisations helps strengthen the defense of human dignity. (27-AUG-04)

Parliamentary Election in Belarus: Human Rights Center “Viasna” Analyses Registration of Initiative

The public association “Human Rights Center “Viasna” that was liquidated by the Supreme Court of Republic of Belarus in 2003 continues its activity. On 24 August the lawyers of the organization completed the analysis of one of the stages of the election into the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly of Republic of Belarus (Parliament) and presented its results at Viasna´s web site.
