Azerbaijani Human Rights Defenders and activists in Georgia

„Solidarity to Afgan Mukhtarli! Freedom to Afgan Mukhtarli!“ representatives of Human Rights House Tbilisi and its member organizations, other human rights defenders, journalists and civil activists were holding banners with these and other slogans during the protest action in front of the Chancellery of the Government of Georgia. Part of them had polyethylene bags over the heads to protest the abduction of the Azerbaijani journalist and to express their solidarity to him.

Demonstrations in Tbilisi: “Georgian March” and counter protests of civil society activists

Group of ultranationalists marched along the Aghmashenebeli avenue in the center of Tbilisi on July 14. The protest was called “Georgian march”. The organizers of the Georgian March voiced their “official claim” to make immigration law stricter and to deport “illegal and criminal” migrants from Georgia. However, the statement disseminated by the organizers contained clearly xenophobic demands, like: “For the Georgian Georgia”.
Representatives of the civil society, civil activists, human rights organizations actively protested the so-called March of the Georgians, the July 14 rally of the ultranationalists’ group in Tbilisi.

Persecution of journalists continues in Azerbaijan

In the latest case of the Azerbaijani authorities targeting journalists and independent media, Faig Amirli, Financial Director of Azadliq (Freedom) newspaper, has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison on charges of inciting religious hatred and tax evasion.
