Election Observation project: Call for Applications

United Centre of Initiatives for Belarus (JuBIC), Swedish International Liberal Centre (Silc), European Humanities University (EHU) and Belarusian Human Rights House in Vilnius (HRH) announce a new call for applications to participate in “Election Observation: Theory and Practice“ project in 2010. The first mission for new participants will take place in October in Bosnia and Herzegovina or Latvia.

Russia must give Aleksei Sokolov a fair trial

Russian human rights activist and the head of an organization campaigning against torture Aleksei Sokolov has been sentenced to five years in a high security prison colony, one year after his arrest by police outside his house in Yekaterinburg. Aleksei Sokolov was charged with robbery.

Burma: 2010 elections will define the political landscape for years to come

Burma in 2010 will hold its first elections in twenty years. Given the restrictive provisions of the 2010 Political Parties Registration Law that bar anyone serving a prison term from membership in a political party, many imprisoned dissidents will be excluded from the process, unless they are released in the near future. The elections and the constitution they will bring into force will define the political landscape for years to come.

Amnesty International Report 2010: Nobody above law

Amnesty International launched “Report 2010: State of the World’s Human Rights”, which documents abuses in 159 countries. The organization said that powerful governments are blocking advances in international justice by standing above the law on human rights, shielding allies from criticism and acting only when politically convenient.

Pre-election situation in Georgia

On May 30, Georgian voters will elect 64 new municipal councils for a four-year term. The major focus of the local elections is made on contest in the capital city, Tbilisi, which will directly elect its mayor for the first time.
