CEDAW: Indigenous rural women discriminated against in Mexico
With the release of its concluding observations addressed to Mexico, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) expresses concern about harmful cultural practices and violence directed at indigenous rural women, as well as their lack of access to land, property and justice, and asks for better implementation of women’s rights in the country.
Ecuador in negotiations with Britain over Assange
Ecuador’s president has invited UK government to talks over the fate of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on the condition that Britain guarantee it will not enter the diplomatic mission in London where Assange has sought shelter. Computer hacker Assange, whom Swedish prosecutors want to question over accusations of rape and sexual assault, jumped bail and fled to the Ecuadorian embassy nine weeks ago.

Belarusian KGB not only follows the election campaign, but also tracks news on human rights websites. The president of the Belarusian Human Rights House Tatsiana Ravyaka was questioned in regard to one of the articles on spring96.org website.
Standards of drafting statements of reasons in judicial decisions
The National Council of Judiciary responded to another letter of the HFHR concerning the issue of judges copying passages from justifications written in other cases. The NCJ upheld its previous position on the matter. In addition, it condemned the practice of repeating lexical, stylistic and punctuation errors in the copied passages of statements of reasons.
HFHR gives its opinion on the draft amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure
The HFHR presented the Minister of Justice with an opinion on the draft law amending the Code of Criminal Procedure, dated 5 June 2012. The project in its current shape is designed to significantly modify the essence of criminal litigation. So far, the court has played a key role in criminal evidentiary proceedings. However, the draft amendment places the burden of going forward with evidence onto the parties to the proceedings.

Three members of a feminist punk band Pussy Riot were sentenced this week to two years in prison for performing a song against President Vladimir Putin in a Moscow cathedral in February.

Year has passed since Ales Belyatsky’s arrest
4 August 2012 marked one year since the arrest of Ales Belyatsky, a Belarusian human rights activist. Ales Belyatsky was arrested after Polish and Lithuanian prosecutors had provided Belarussian authorities with details of his private bank accounts, used to receive funds for victims of political repression in Belarus. Mr Belyatsky was sentenced to four and a half years in a high-security colony and property forfeiture.
No place for opposition in election commissions
Civic and political activists face increasing discrimination on political grounds in the run-up to parliamentary elections which are to be held in Belarus on 23 September. Nominees from opposition parties and NGOs are denied the right to be included in the election commissions’ staff.
