The right to be a human rights defender has been reinforced by the resolution adopted by consensus at the Human Rights Council. The resolution focuses on legislation affecting, restricting and criminalising the work and activities of human rights defenders.

Death sentence carried out year ago, but questions remain

On 17 March 2012 it became known that Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavaliou convicted for terrorist attack in the Minsk metro were executed. Their families received the relevant decisions of the Supreme Court on that day.

Azerbaijan Human Rights House closed for 2 years

On 10 March 2011, the Azerbaijan Human Rights House was ordered to cease its activities by the authorities of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Since, Azerbaijani authorities have delayed to make an agreement and hence maintain the Azerbaijan Human Rights House closed.

Substantial amendments to the Labor Code of Georgia

Ministry of Justice introduced a new Labor Code of Georgia where substantial amendments are made. New amendments promote protection of employees’ rights and prevent them from illegal dissmisals from work. Though, Ministry of Justice of Georgia did not fully consider some fundamental recommendations of NGOs and Trade Unions while working on the draft. In particular, a new draft Labor Code does not duly envisage women’s labor rights, employment of people with disabilities and their labor rights.

HFHR’s opinion on changes of telecommunication data retention law

The HFHR has presented the second opinion on the draft legislative guidelines for the law on obtaining and using telecommunication data drafted by the Ministry of Interior. The reviewed legislative draft aims at restricting the interference of public bodies with privacy of individual persons and strengthening the control mechanisms over obtaining and using telecommunications data.

So-called “traditional values” are not human rights

States advocating traditional values in reality aim at raising their own cultural norms and particularities above international law and standards. Giving legal force to the concept of traditional values opens the door to a dangerous framework, where States and non-State actors can invoke this concept to justify human rights violations.

Cassation against a failure to delete a name on the list of unwelcome foreigners

Chakib Marakchi is a Moroccan citizen. In 2009, he applied to the Head of the Office for Foreigners for the removal of his personal data from both the Polish list of unwelcome foreigners and the Schengen Information System. The Office for Foreigners twice declined Mr Marakchi’s request.

Azerbaijan and Russia: systemic and systematic human rights violations

Once again, Sunday 10 March in Baku, peaceful protestors were met with police violence. Last Sunday, families and relatives of soldiers killed at the army in non-conflict situations were violently dispersed and more than 50 people were detained. Earlier this year, on Saturday 26 January 2013, 47 people were arrested for peacefully protesting in Baku.
