Human Rights House Foundation has joined 24 organisations in expressing concern over statements on the suspension of Azerbaijan from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), made by the head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Suma Chakrabarti.

On World Press Freedom Day, 32 human rights organisations, including Human Rights House Foundation, issue a joint statement calling on the Azerbaijani authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Mehman Huseynov.

Human Rights Houses Foundation wrote to the Central District Court in Belarus to appeal to the Court to drop charges against prominent human rights lawyer Leonid Sudalenka, which relate to his participating in and monitoring and reporting on recent peaceful protests. The Court heard his case on 17 March, and delivered a warning to him and charged him fees.

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a prominent international coalition, should suspend Azerbaijan’s membership for failing to carry out key reforms, a coalition of 21 groups including Human Rights Watch, ARTICLE 19, and International Media Support said today. The EITI, during its board meeting in Bogota, Colombia, on March 8 and 9, 2017, will review Azerbaijan’s efforts to ease its repression of civil society groups as the EITI had required.
