US aims to deploy forces in Azerbaijan

The issue of stationing US military bases in the Republic of Azerbaijan came into spotlight after US Defense Secretary Rumsfeld´s one-day visit to Republic of Azerbaijan at mid-August. The US official´s talks with the government of Republic of Azerbaijan have triggered heated discussions on the issue by the Azeri public and mass media and sparked concerns of the Russian Federation and Islamic Republic of Iran. Media around the world, including the USA, have released reports saying that the US intends to deploy forces in the Republic of Azerbaijan. (22 August 2004)

Illustration to Work of of Electoral Commissions in Belarus

The election into the Parliament of Republic of Belarus will take place on 4 October. District electoral commissions have been already formed and have begun registration of candidates’ initiative groups. This stage has never been a problem before. As a rule, all initiative groups were registered during all previous elections. Now some district election commissions insistently refuse to register the groups. It has become a real problem for some well-known regional activists.

Supreme Court upholds sentence of scientist jailed for espionage

Today the Russian Supreme Court upheld a sentence the Moscow City Court earlier handed down on Russian researcher Igor Sutyagin, who was found guilty of spying. The Moscow City Court on April 7 sentenced Sutyagin to 15 years in prison. The court ruled that his term be counted from the date of his detention in Obninsk in the Kaluga region on October 29, 1999. Opposition activist jailed

Taliyat Aliyev, the Secretary on Organizational Issues of Republic of Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) has been detained by Prosecutor Administration of Nasimi District on 12 August 2004. He was detained in relation to the scandal at the court trial of seven opposition party leaders, who were arrested just aftermath the disputed presidential elections of last fall. (16 August 2004)
