Extremism went out of control
The Karelian town of Kondopoga was consumed by ethnic violence over the weekend, with angry and often drunken bands of Slavs waging an uncoordinated series of attacks on natives of the Caucasus. The situation in Kondopoga remains strained and far from peaceful. Human rights activists appeal to the Russian authorities to do utmost to prevent the nationalist attacks and xenophobia that is spreading in the Russian society and thoroughly investigate events in Kondopoga. Lone Tibetan monk stages demonstration in Lhasa Barkhor street
According to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), a lone 23-year-old Tibetan monk staged a short demonstration calling for freedom in Tibet on 3 September 2006 at the busy Barkhor street in Lhasa, right, “Tibet Autonomous Region” (“TAR”). Within minutes, the Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials and security personnels deployed by the Lhasa Neighbourhood Committee hastily moved him away from the area. (06-SEP-06)

The second anniversary of the Beslan tragedy
On September, 3rd policemen and OMON soldiers brutally broke up the rally in Moscow held in memory of Beslan victims. The investigation of tragic events in Beslan in September 2004 is being continued. Human rights activists believe that during two years the authorities made a show of investigation and didn’t try to answer the main question: “Who decided that there would be an assault and no negotiations, who violently ordered to begin the school’s storm?” (05-SEP-06)
Belarus: Is Election Observation Equated to War Propaganda?
On the 4th of August 2006 Belarusian court has delivered a judgement in the case of “Partnership” NGO – from 6 months to 2 years of prison for the activity in the name of unregistered organization. Evidently Belarusian authorities consider elections observation as dangerous for the society as war propaganda or social, national, religious and racial hostility.
Two of four convicted young people are free now. They held a press conference today.(05-SEP-06)

The trial over Sakit Zahidov, a journalist famous for his satirical poems disclosing the ruling regime in the Republic of Azerbaijan, who was arrested on the 23-rd of June and charged with purchase of a large amount drugs with intent to sell, has started. The first hearing started up with irregularities and sharp critics of the imprisoned journalist. (01-SEP-2006)

Tibet: Youth, Culture and Economic Warfare
Chinese presence in Tibet, and China´s policies towards the autonomous region, have once again come under scrutiny following charges brought against Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials in Spain. A group of exiled Tibetans, coordinated by the Madrid-based Committee to Support Tibet (CAT), has filed genocide charges against seven former CCP officials in the Spanish Constitutional Court, where a principle called universal jurisdiction allows for the prosecution of international cases not involving Spanish citizens, provided the defendants are not being tried in their home country. Appeal to Political Parties and Independent Candidates
At the beginning of the election campaign, Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through its press release, used an opportunity to appeal to all political parties and independent candidates to run their campaigns fairly, respecting the fundamental democratic principles.
