Bergen rallies in support of the democracy movement in Burma

Support to the peaceful protesters in Burma was the main message of a demonstration in Bergen, Norway, today, initiated by Sosialistisk Ungdom (Socialist Youth), but joined by many other political and human rights groups. -We are humbled and full of admiration for the courage shown by the Burmese monks and nuns, said Arne Liljedahl Lynngård of the Rafto Foundation in his appeal. Thich Quang Do calls on UN to take emergency action on Burma

Venerable Thich Quang Do, right, the 2006 Rafto Prize Laureate, calls on United Nations to take emergency action on Burma and expresses solidarity with Buddhists´ and civilians´ peaceful, democratic protests. In his Letter to the UN Secretary General, Thich Quang Do wrote: “I express the deep alarm of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam on the violent repression of peaceful and democratic protests by the military government of Burma/Myanmar. One year anniversary of Politkovskaya’s murder

On 7 October 2006, the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, right, was shot and killed outside her home in Moscow. On Sunday 7 October this year, several Norwegian human rights organisations, among them HRH F and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, both of the Human Rights House in Oslo, will observe the one year anniversary of her death with a memorial event at the Nobel Peace Centre. UN issues report on human rights defenders’ situation in Macedonia

On September 25, in Skopje the Special Representative of the UN Secretary- General on the situation of human rights defenders, Hina Jilani, finished her official visit to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
