Assault on freedom of expression in Egypt

HIV Aids becoming a bigger problem in Azerbaijan

Totally, from 1987 to 20 November 2007 there have been registered 1232 HIV-infected people in Azerbaijan; the number of deaths in this period is 192 people. However, 1 December, the international day of struggle against HIV/AIDS, there has been voiced a concern that the real number of HIV-infected people is much larger as people, being afraid of the stigma, do not dare to take the test. Master Classes on Human Rights in Lenkaran

The Society for Humanitarian Research conducted Master Classes on Human Rights, Conflict Transformation and Gender Issues in Lenkaran. The classes were organized for local representatives of human rights organizations and mass media in 28-30 November 2007, and were financially supported by the South Caucasus office of Henrich Boell Foundation. Choices, not rights: Free speech in the UK

The row over whether David Irving and Nick Griffin should have spoken at the Oxford Union is not an argument about freedom of speech. The Union president chose to invite far-right demagogues to speak, rather than someone who actively campaigns for free speech. (28-NOV-07)

Svetlana Gannusjkina receives the Sakharov Freedom Award from NHC

Svetlana Aleksejevna Gannusjkina, right, leader of the independent Russian human rights organisation Grazjdanskoje Sodestvije (Civic Assistance Committee) today received the Sakharov Freedom Award from the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC). Gannusjkina also leads the IDP and refugee programme of the organisation Memorial´s human rights centre (29-NOV-08)

Somali authorities arrest two journalists reporting on regional conflict

NUSOJ protests the 26 November 2007 arrest of journalists Abdiqani Hassan Farah and Mohammed Shakale in Las Anod town of Sool region. Somaliland armed forces arrested the two journalists separately in the city centre of Las Anod, according to news reports and journalists in Las Anod who reported to NUSOJ.  (28-NOV-07)
