Democratic forces in the Republic of Belarus have started a campaign demanding decent serving conditions in the detention center in Akrestsina Street in Minsk. This institution is well-known in the Republic of Belarus as the jail where participants of civic actions, youth activists and political opponents of the regime serve short-term arrests. The present conditions of incarceration, mainly of political prisoners, are more like torture, according to Valiantsin Stefanovich, right, a Belarusian human rights lawyer, working for Viasna. President of Poland refuses to appoint 9 persons for the position of judges
On January 25, 2008 the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights addressed to Mr. Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe and to Mr. Jose Manuel Barosso, President of the European Commission, letters regarding refusal of the President of Republic of Poland to appoint 9 persons for the position of judges in Polish courts. The point is that alI the persons concerned followed the process af judicial appointments established by the relevant law and fulfilled all the pre-conditions required for the respective positions.(28-JAN-08)
Human Rights House Foundation condemns the violence in Kenya
Human Rights House Foundation (HRH F) condemns the post-electoral violence in the Republic of Kenya and calls for the limitations to freedom of expression and information movement and peaceful assembly to be lifted. In the same statement, HRH F also expresses deep concern that the current crisis has also resulted in targeted harassment and threats against human rights defenders. Women for Freedom of Expression
The Women’s Council of Popular Front Party organized a press conference on the theme “Women for freedom of Expression” at International Press Center. The conference, held with participation of the representatives from political parties, human rights organizations and mass media, concluded that the freedom of expression is in serious danger in the Republic of Azerbaijan. “Radio Liberty” Journalist Released
The Radio Liberty correspondent, Ilgar Nasibov, sentenced to three months of imprisonment in Nakhichevan on 6 December, was released on the 10-th of December. According to the correspondent he was threatened and subjected to extreme psychological pressure in the prison. (13-DEC-07)
Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan
A number of events were held in the Republic of Azerbaijan on occasion of the International Human Rights Day, organized by national and international human rights actors.
