Earlier, Rene van der Linden, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, had also called upon the President of Republic of Belarus to abolish the death penalty. On 07 February Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe Monitoring Committee co-rapporteurs Andreas Herkel and Yevgeniya Jivkova held a press-conference on the results of their trip to Republic of Azerbaijan. Human rights groups hope the arrest of a former rebel leader in the DRC will lead to further arrests of military and civilian leaders accused by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of having committed atrocities, also in the Republic of Uganda and the Republic of the Sudan. With their commitment to cooperation, Congolese authorities have set an example to follow for their Ugandan and Sudanese counterparts. (08-FEB-08)

Three leaders of Homel criminal gang – Valery Harbaty, Ihar Danchanka and Siarhei Marozau – have been executed by shooting lately. On 6 February the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis condemned the new facts of death punishment in Republic of Belarus. Earlier the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Rene van der Linden also called the president of Republic of Belarus to abolish the death sentences to the criminals. In a statement signed by Information and Communications permanent secretary on Monday, the Government said that the ban had been lifted with immediate effect. PS  Bitange Ndemo said that the ban was lifted by Internal Security minister George Saitoti, right, following the improvement of security in the country. (05-FEB-08)
