Meeting on the situation in Iranian Kurdistan

The Norwegian Council for the Rights of the Kurds invites to an open meeting today at 16.15 at the Human Rights House in Oslo. Keynote speaker at the meeting is Hemen Saidi, who represents KDP and teaches in exile at the University of Arbil. Saidi will give a presentation of the political situation in Islamic Republic of Iran in general, and about the situation for the Kurds in particular. (29-MAY-08)

Ugandan Cabinet to delete ‘press freedom’ from Constitution

A Cabinet committee tasked to advise the government on taming critical media is considering a constitutional amendment that deletes the provision on freedom of the press. The sub-committee headed by Public Service Minister, Henry Muganwa Kajura, right, was formed after three separate Cabinet papers on the management of the media failed to find consensus in Cabinet. Several journalists given awards for their human rights coverage

A contest carried out with financial support from Open Society Institute of the Media Rights Center – Assistance Fund on the topic of “Journalist investigations on the situation of human rights” has concluded. Conference of PACE Monitoring Group

On 19 May 2008 PACE Monitoring Group held the press conference on the results of Monitoring Committee of PACE. During this conference co-rapporteurs of Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe Andreas Herkel and Yevgeniya Jivkova’s touched the question, related to the freedom of speech situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan and criminal cases against journalists in the country. Election Monitoring Center Lost Registration

Basing on minor technical pretexts, the Ministry of Justice liquidated the registration of Election Monitoring Center on 14 April 2008, three months after the organization got registration. According to the chairman of the EMC, Anar Mammadli (right) “the closure of the center is directly connected with the 15 October presidential elections. We have right to freedom of association. Utilizing this right we’ll continue our work with or without registration”. (16-MAY-08)

Film on Nagorno-Karabagh

The Society for Humanitarian Researches produced a film “Nagorno Karabagh – consulting with the society”. The film is based on the questions and answers of political scientists and representatives of NGO-s, participating in the peacemaking process related to the issue of Nagorno Karabagh. It is planned to translate the film to Russian, English and German languages. The first presentation of the film will be held in the Republic of Turkey and Germany. (08-MAY-08)

Dialogue with islamists

Some time ago, the Norwegian playwright Erling Kittelsen’s, right, play ‘På himmelen’ (‘On the sky’) (2000) was staged in Amman, Jordan. The title, the production and the reception / interpretation all contributed to Kittelsen and his director Bani Hani being subjected to a fatwa. Kittelsen´s response was to write about it, in Jordan, and enter into dialogue with the islamists. He achieved to have the fatwa called off. (28-MAY-08)

Sahrawi student severely injured by police. Contribute to his treatment

On 17 May, Moroccan police threw Elwali Alkadimi, right, out from the third floor of a building. According to his family, Alkadimi broke his neck and is in urgent need of surgery. His family fears that he may end up paralysed and crippled from the injuries he suffered in the fall, and medical tests have established that large parts of his body are already immobilised, as in a state of paralysis. Six students – participants of the Human Rights Workshops for Students organized by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights – have decided to fight against verbal discrimination. They contrived a social campaign, the aim of which is to introduce changes in their surroundings. Currently, they are initiating the campaign ‘I feel good in Republic of Poland. Almost always’.
