Gay-pride march in Moscow imposed 155 bans

The organizers of the gay-pride march in Moscow are trying to appeal in court 155 bans on their march. On 17 July, several complaints were sent to the Tverskaya District Court of Moscow to ban marches from 12 to 31 May. Earlier, organizers appealed in court the ban on the gay-pride march, which was planed to be held from 1 to 11 May 2008. (31-JULY-08)

ARTICLE 19 Gives Expert Evidence to Court in Indonesia

On 23 July, Toby Mendel, Senior Director of Law at ARTICLE 19, appeared before the Indonesian Constitutional Court as an expert witness in a case challenging, among other things, imprisonment for defamation. Mendel, who appeared before the Court via video-link, argued that imprisonment for defamation is inconsistent with international guarantees of freedom of expression and that it is increasingly rare for democratic states around the world to impose criminal penalties in defamation cases. A criminal case was initiated under article 282 Criminal Code of the RF – ” to stir up hatred or hostility” in connection with organizing and holding the exhibition “Forbidden Art-2006” at the Andrei Sakharov Museum and Public Center in March 2007. (29-JULY-08)

The lawyers of blogger Savva Terentyev filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of the Komi Republic on the decision of the Court of First Instance. Mr. Terentyev spoke of this on 14 July at a press conference in Moscow. (25-JULY-08)

U.S.Ambassador Received “Journalists’ Friend” Award

On 24 July presentation of the “Journalists’ Friend” award was conducted. The Head of Civil and Political Rights Center Parviz Hashimli opened the event and explained that the winners were chosen according to survey conducted among journalists.
