Tibet committee encourages people to join light protest

Tomorrow, the 7th of August, is the day before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing. The Norwegian Tibet Committee joins a grassroots campaign called ‘Candle for Tibet’ and urges people to light a candle in solidarity with all oppressed people in Tibet. A collective candle protest will be held in the centre of Oslo. (06-AUG-08)

Roundtable Talk on Poverty and Human Rights

The Rafto Foundation in association with the Bergen Summer Research School is holding a roundtable between activists, academics and policymakers on 10 August. Poverty and human rights violations are the issues to be addressed. Special attention will be given to the particular case-study of the “untouchables” or Dalits in India to illustrate how human rights violations can be directly connected to people being stuck in poverty. President Allocates Funds to Mass Media

On 31 July President Ilham Aliyev (right) signed a decree to give out one time financial aid to mass media institutions. According to the decree, 38 mass media institutions will each receive one time aid in the amount of 5000 AZN (6200 USD approximately) from the president’s reserve fund. (1-AUG-2008)
