The First Children Embassy in the World Megjashi begins the campaign “See it. Hear it. Say it.” in order to encourage children, parents, neighbours and close ones, not to tolerate violence, but to report it.

Myanmar: Two-year sentence for leading poet

English PEN strongly protests the two-year prison sentence handed down to leading poet Saw Wei, for a poem critical of the authorities. English PEN is calling for Saw Wei’s immediate and unconditional release, as well as of all those currently detained in Myanmar in violation of Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Sri Lankan journalist serving 250 days’ detention

In a statement, ARTICLE 19 and Index on Censorship called for the immediate release of JS Tissainayagam, a Sri Lankan newspaper editor and human rights activist serving in detention for 250 days under the controversial charges of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

Youth group of Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina held a street action on 28th of October along with the members of the project The Ban Bus 2008. The street action was a part of a public campaign for banning cluster bombs.

Sudan journalists protest restrictions to their freedom of expression

More than 50 Sudanese journalists went on a 24 hour hunger strike last week and three Sudanese newspapers shut down for three days to protest against the censorship imposed on the press by Sudanese National Security Services, including the daily pre-print and post-print censorship, and repeated suspension orders.

Manevski doubles sentences for paedophiles

The Ministry of Justice, Mr. Mihajlo Manevski, proposed immediate changes in the Criminal Code and doubled the sentences for child abuse. The immediate changes took place after the meeting of the Government around three weeks ago. Manevski was designated in charge of preparing more severe punishments for sexual assault over children, after it was concluded that the paedophilia in FYR Macedonia was still in progress.
