Azerbaijan reviewed under the UPR

Republic of Azerbaijan was reviewed by the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group on February 4. Its delegation was led by Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Khalaf Khalafov, right. During the session it was a challenge to create a constructive dialogue with the Azerbaijani delegation on the problems the country has with the implementation of its legal framework.

Sudanese reaction to the possible indictment of President Bashir by the ICC

Representatives of independent Sudanese civil society organizations, media and rights activists called on Sudanese government, political actors and civil society members to urgently convene a conference to discuss the crisis brought on by the Sudanese government’s reaction to the charges brought by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court against the President of Republic of the Sudan.

IFJ calls for urgent action as fears grow over ordeal of journalist in Eritrea

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called for urgent humanitarian action by the international community over the plight of Dawit Isaak, a journalist and writer who has been held in State of Eritrea without trial for almost eight years and who is believed to be seriously ill.

African Union should respect and support universal jurisdiction

On the occasion of the 12thsummit of the African Union (AU), Member States’ discussions included the fight against impunity for serious international crimes and the principle of universal jurisdiction. The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) urges the African Union to use this opportunity to explore ways of how best to support an exercise of universal jurisdiction and to clarify misconceptions of the principle, thereby contributing to global accountability for the most serious crimes.

Prominent Somali journalist assassinated in Mogadishu

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) strongly condemns today’s brutal assassination of Said Tahlil Ahmed, Director of HornAfrik Radio in Mogadishu at around 14:45 hrs local time. Three men with pistols shot Said Tahlil Ahmed four times in the head in Bakara Market.
