-Reject resolutions threatening freedom of expression

Forty seven international, regional and national civil society organizations – including ARTICLE 19 – have written to Member States of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) expressing their opposition to draft resolutions on “combating defamation of religions” and on complementary standards to the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Fake report on renewed war in Georgia triggers panic

A 30-minute-long fake report by Imedi TV on March 13, as if Russian troops were advancing to Tbilisi, triggered panic and also wave of anger on the television station, which has a nationwide broadcasting.

The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Vitit Muntarbhorn, accuses the military regime in North Korea of horrific human rights abuses. The Rafto Prize (1993) laureate, José Ramos-Horta, calls international community to pay more attention to human rights situation in North Korea, not only to its nuclear programme.

Belarus makes first steps towards abolishing the death penalty

Council of Europe and EU opinions about abolishing the death penalty in the Republic of Belarus will not be determinative in a decision making process. Mikalai Samaseika, a chair of the Parliament working group on the death penalty, stated this on 3 March in Minsk. At the same time changes in the official death penalty rhetoric are apparent.

Norwegian PEN calls to sign the petition to free journalists and writers in Iran

Norwegian PEN has joined the Our Society Will Be a Free Society campaign. Its aim is to petition the Islamic Republic of Iran leader to free the journalists and writers held in Islamic Republic of Iran. Norwegian PEN calls to sign the petition and join the campaign before 20 March 2010.
