Government Legislation Centre responds in the matter of the amendment of Assemblies Act

The Head of the Government Legislation Centre (RCL) responded to the HFHR’s letter concerning the amendment to the Assemblies Act. Maciej Berek, Head of the RCL, said there had been no defects in the RCL’s course of action discussed in the letter. In August 2011 the HFHR appealed in this case to the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk

Human rights defenders demand release of political prisoners in Belarus (updated)

A series of special events designed by FIDH is taking place now. These activities aim to achieve the release of political prisoners, among whom is now vice president of FIDH, the head of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski. 11 more political prisoners were released on 14 September. The Human Rights House Foundation has prepared a special statement to the UN Human Rights Council

Index on Censorship and Article 19 express their concern that the Hungarian Media Council is stifling free speech and disregarding media pluralism in the country. One of the most popular Hungarian radio stations famous for its political debate and criticism of government „Klub Radio“ is in danger of losing its licence.

HR Centre “Viasna”: Dialogue with Lukashenka is impossible while there are political prisoners

On 29 August, Aliaksandr Lukashenka spoke of the need of negotiations between representatives of the European Union, Russia and the Belarusian opposition of “whatever political camp they belong to.” In response to these words of the President the HR Centre “Viasna” released a declaration stating that the main condition for negotiations is the release of political prisoners.

29 жніўня Аляксандр Лукашэнка заявіў пра неабходнасць арганізацыі перамоў паміж прадстаўнікамі Еўрасаюза, Расіі і беларускай апазіцыі “да якога б палітычнага лагеру яны ні належалі”. У адказ на такія словы кіраўніка дзяржавы ПЦ “Вясна” распаўсюдзіў заяву, дзе сказана, што галоўнай умовай правядзення перамоў ёсць вызваленне палітвязняў.

The findings of GYLA questions the official version of demonstrator’s death

On September 6, 2011 the Georgian Young Lawyers` Association (GYLA) published important findings, regarding to the cases of deprivation of lives during the rally dispersal. According to the findings, one of the protesters – Nika Kvintradze, who, as police claim, died as a result of electrocution, was among those arrested by the riot police.

International comunity calls again to explain the case of CIA prisons

The Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a draft resolution on the abuse of the state secrecy privilege by intelligence services acting to protect state security. The draft resolution was based on the latest Dick Marty’s report, which analysed the issue of the accountability of certain CE member states for their participation in the CIA-operated clandestine rendition and detention programme.
