World Hockey Championship: detentions, a ban on entry and warnings for human rights defenders

Ice Hockey World Championship is to be held from 9 to 25 May 2014 in Minsk. On this occasion, representatives of international and national human rights organizations launched several campaigns to draw attention to the human rights situation in Belarus. Belarusian authorities, in their turn, have begun preventive detentions and banned Swedish human rights defender from entering the country.

Shame and fame for Azerbaijan

The move to persecute one of the most prominent human rights defenders of Azerbaijan, Leyla Yunus, and her husband Arif Yunus, threw shame on the country’s authorities. The country’s election to the presidency of the Council of Europe will however bring fame.

United Nations calls upon Azerbaijan to drop charges against Anar Mammadli

In a joint statement the Special rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and of association and the Rapporteur on human rights defenders call for all charges against Anar Mammadli, Bashir Suleymanli and Elnur Mammadov to be dropped and for the immediate release of Anar Mammadli. HRHF has been following the court hearings in Baku on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 May.

Amicus curiae brief in Delfi v. Estonia

The HFHR submitted an amicus curiae brief before the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights in the case Delfi AS v. Estonia. The matter revolves around a crucial contemporary problem related to the freedom of speech on the Internet, namely responsibility of website administrators for unlawful content published by other users. The brief has already been filed with the case file.

SAC: legalisation of stay necessary, based on right to family life

The Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) admitted the complaint of an Armenian citizen who appealed against a judgment of the Provincial Administrative Court in Warsaw. In the appealed ruling, the first-instance court upheld a decision of the Head of the Office for Foreigners to refuse the complainant a tolerated residence permit.

Чэмпіянат свету па хакеі пройдзе з 9 па 25 траўня 2014 года ў Мінску. З гэтай нагоды прадстаўнікі міжнародных і нацыянальных праваабарончых арганізацый распачалі шэраг кампаній, якія звяртаюць увагу на сітуацыю з правамі чалавека ў Беларусі. Беларускія улады, у сваю чаргу, ужо пачалі прэвентыўныя затрыманні і забаранілі шведскаму праваабаронцу ўезд у краіну .

Georgia passes antidiscrimination law

After fierce debate with the Orthodox Church, on May 2 the law on the elimination of all forms of discrimination and related sub-bills was passed with 115 votes to one. As it moves towards signing an association agreement with the European Union this June, Georgia is trying to make its legal environment more EU-compatible. According to the agreement between EU-Georgia the adaptation of the anti-discrimination law will help in moving ahead with visa liberalization.

On April 24, conference on “Judiciary Miscarriages in Transitional Period and Mechanisms for Their Eradication” took place at Human Rights House Tbilisi. Representatives of the participating NGOs presented their visions how to restore justice in the country.
