Joint report of the Human Rights House Tbilisi presented at the UN Human Rights Council

On October 7, Board Chair of Human Rights House Tbilisi Nino Elbakidze presented the report on the state of human rights in Georgia at the presentation of the Universal Periodic Report (UPR) in the UN Human Rights Council. Two of HRHT member organizations – Article 42 of the Constitution and Georgian Center for the Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (GCRT) prepared the report for the UPR with the support of the Geneva Office of the Human Rights House Foundation.

Belarusian observers on the elections: non-free, non-transparent and undemocratic

The elections in Belarus were not free and did not meet international standards. These findings were announced by the election observers on 12 October during the press conference at the Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House.

Hearing into the Yunus couple case to be renewed at the Baku Appeal Court on October 15

On August 13, 2015 Baku Court on Grave Crimes passed verdict on famous Azerbaijan human rights defender Leyla Yunus and sentenced her to 8 years and 5 months imprisonment; her husband Arif Yunus was sent to prison for 7 years, if nothing will be changed. According to the verdict, their bank accounts were frozen; their property in Azerbaijan, Turkey and Czech Republic will be confiscated. Two years after completion of imprisonment term they will be banned to occupy high positions.

Elections in Belarus — Aliaksandr Lukashenka was elected to 5th term

According to the preliminary data of the Central Election Committee Aliaksandr Lukashenka won the presidential election by a landslide. Belarusian human rights activists claim there were substantial violations of international standards. The same view is shared by OSCE ODIHR observers. CIS mission observers stated the elections to be exemplary.

“(Il)legal killing…” – the discussion on death penalty was held in Vilnius

On 7 October the discussion “(Il)legal killing…” was held in Vilnius with the participation of the Belarusian human rights defenders, journalists and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania. The discussion was organized by the the Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House in partnership with the human rights organization Freedom House, and was one in a number of events within the Week against the death penalty in Belarus.

7 кастрычніка ў Вільні адбылася дыскусія «Забойства па прысудзе …» з удзелам беларускіх праваабаронцаў, журналістаў і прадстаўніка МЗС Літвы. Дыскусія, арганізаваная Беларускім домам правоў чалавека імя Барыса Звозскава ў партнёрстве з праваабарончай арганізацыяй Freedom House, стала адным з шэрагу мерапрыемстваў у рамках Тыдня супраць смяротнага пакарання ў Беларусі.
