A court ruling today affirmed popular science writer Simon Singh’s, right, right to free expression. He has been granted leave to appeal in the libel action brought against him by the British Chiropractic Association.

Nepal: government putting journalists at risk

ARTICLE 19, the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) and Freedom Forum (FF) strongly condemn the Government of Nepal’s intentions to use journalists as informants, to help implement its Special Security Plan. This would significantly increase the already seriously hazardous working environment for journalists. It is also contrary to international standards, as well as the Agenda for Change, launched by ARTICLE 19, FNJ and FF in February 2009.

‘Look Europe’ by Ghazi Rabihavi

A unique chance to see a reading of the powerful play ‘Look Europe’ by the Iranian playwright Ghazi Rabihavi. The play is based on what happened to English PEN’s Honorary Member Faraj Sarkohi, editor of Adineh, the only independent journal in Iran, when he was arrested in 1996 and accused of spying.

Politkovskaya award won by Iranian women’s rights campaign

Last night, the Politkovskaya award was won by an Iranian campaign for women’s rights, One Million Signatures, against the discrimination of women. After 2007 year’s laureate Natalia Estemirova was killed, RAW in WAR became increasingly concerned about the safety of individual award winners.

Nicaragua: ARTICLE 19 and partners submit report to the UN Universal Periodic Review

ARTICLE 19 has tabled a Submission to the first Universal Periodic Review for
Nicaragua (UPR) by the Human Rights Council in February 2010. In partnership
with the Nicaraguan Centre for Human Rights (CENIDH), the Centre for
Investigation and Communication (CINCO), and Violeta Barrios de Chamorro
Foundation (FVBCH), the Submission analyses the freedom of expression situation in Nicaragua.
