Helsinki Commission Speaks out on HR Violation in Russia

The Helsinki Commission has released a report on violations of human rights in OSCE member states that are taking part in the OSCE Human Dimension Implementation meeting that starts in Warsaw on Monday. In particular, the authors of the report surveyed the plight of people from the Caucasus region and the Romany minority in the Russian Federation. (05-OCT-04)

A coalition of Russian and international human rights organizations united today to condemn in the strongest terms the taking hostage and killing of hundreds of children, parents and teachers by a group of armed men and women in a school in the city of Beslan, North Ossetia, in the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation. Over 300 Killed in School Carnage

Wails of grief reverberated through the streets of Beslan on Sunday as its residents began burying the more than 300 people slaughtered in a 52-hour hostage crisis last week. The standoff with a group of terrorists came to a violent and unexpected end Friday when a giant explosion rocked the gymnasium at School No. 1, where many of the more than 1,000 hostages were being held. The blast triggered a chaotic 10-hour battle that killed more than 300 people, many of them children. (06-SEP-04)

Under Siege School May Hold as Many as 1500 Hostages

A woman released from the school in North Ossetia where militants are holding hundreds of children hostage for a third day said there could be over 1000 hostages, instead of the officially announced 320. This came as federal authorities resumed talks with the rebels Friday morning. (03-SEP-04)
