Protestors Demand Treatment for HIV-Infected Prisoners in Russia
15.02.05 About 20 people handcuffed themselves to the gates of the Justice Ministry in Moscow in protest at the treatment of HIV-infected prisoners in the Russian Federation. The protest came in response to the growing number of suicides in Russian prisons by HIV-infected inmates. Some of the protestors held up placards with the slogan “Treatment is a right — not a privilege”. (22-FEB-05)
Council of Europe Raps the Russian Federation Over Yukos Case, Demands Khodorkovsky Release
The Council of Europe passed a resolution on Tuesday questioning the legitimacy of the arrest and prosecution by Russian authorities of Mikhail Khodorkovsky and other managers of the disintegrating Russian oil giant Yukos. The resolution questions the fairness, impartiality, and objectivity of the authorities, who, it said, appeared to have acted excessively, disregarding fundamental rights of defense. (28-JAN-05)

The jury of the Olof Palme Prize has awarded three Russian human rights activists in 2004 . The Prize will be given to the head of Helsinki Group in Moscow, Lyudmila Alekseyeva, the president of the Human Rights Institute, Sergei Kovalyov, and the reporter of the opposition Novaya Gazeta newspaper, Anna Politkovskaya.
