Employees of the Human Rights center “Memorial” have been detained in the Chechen Republic

On 17 June, four employees of the Human Rights Center “Memorial” were detained while photographing a building in the Chechen Republic where, according to human rights defenders, kidnapped people were illegally. The Human Rights Center “Memorial” intends to address this incident to the Prosecutor and the Court. (28-JUN-08)

The Amnesty International Annual Report

28 May 2008 International human rights organization Amnesty International released its annual report on the state of the protection of human rights in the world. This time, the USA received the sharpest criticism. However, the Russian Federation was among the number of the countries where the quantity of attacks because of racism and prosecutions “for political dissent” noticeably increased. Amnesty International addressed president Dmitry Medvedev with a request to take measures for the guarantee of the observance of human rights and freedom in the Russian Federation. (30-MAY-08)

The law on public control in places of imprisonment has been adopted by the State Duma in the third

21 May 2008 the State Duma passed in its final, third reading, the law “On Public Control for Ensuring Human Rights in Detention Facilities and Assisting Persons in Detention Facilities”. Should the law e approved by the Federation Council and signed by the president it is assumed that it will to come into force on 1 September 2008. (23-MAY-08)

Spring Draft 2008

The spring draft began in the Russian Federation on 1 April and will run till 15 July 2008. As of today human rights defenders have fixed numerous infringements of the draftees’ rights. This was stated by the nongovernmental organization, Committee of Soldier´s Mothers, which gives consultations for citizens and holds weekly assemblies consulting people concerning issues of the draft. Strasbourg court rules the Russian Federation pay $112,000 to Chechen woman

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled the Russian Federation should pay 72,000 Euros ($112,000) in compensation to a resident of the Chechen Republic, whose two relatives went missing in May 2001. Currently, a total of 23,000 temporary cases are pending against the Russian Federation, around 26% of the total. (21-APR-08)

Russian journalist gets asylum in Britain

Yelena Tregubova (right), a Russian journalist, who published a critical book about Vladimir Putin and his environment, fot a political asylum in Great Britain. She escaped the Russian Federation after the bomb exploded outside her apartment. Returning home would have been a mortal danger. A few years later, in similar circumstances, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered. (17-APR-08)

HRH Moscow protests against repression in Belarus

Human Rights House in Moscow has sent a statement concerning brutal police actions and arrests during a peaceful demonstration on 25 of May, 2008 devoted to 90th anniversary of  Belorussian Democratic Republic. Human Rights House in Moscow sent official appeal to Belarusian authorities condemning such “policy” of saving a public order. Clashes in Moscow against presidential election`s results

3 March 2008 opposition protesters held rallies in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg against the election of  Dmitry Medvedev, Vladidmir Putin`s protege. The Moscow authorities without any reason didn`t give an official permission for conducting the March, so it was unauthorized. As a result, dozens of people were beaten and more than 100 arrested by police. (05-MARCH-08)
