Final conference on prevention of torture and violent treatment
27th of January RRCHR will hold a final conference on a joint project “Prevention of tortures and violent treatment in closed establishments of Russia’. Nadezhda Nizovkina and Tatiana Stetsura sentenced to a fine
On 19 January 2011, Sovetsky District Court penalized the participants of the Human Rights House Network project “Electronic Human Rights Education for Lawyers”, human rights defenders Nadezhda Nizovkina and Tatiana Stetsura. The court ordered a fine of 100 thousand rubles each for violations to Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

Russian lawyers arrested ahead of freedom of expression campaign
On 31 December, Buryatian journalist and lawyer Nadezhda Nizovkina and lawyer Tatiana Stetsura were taken into custody following a court decision of the judge Irina Levandovskaya. It happened two hours before the start of a campaign to protect freedom of expression. Before the campaign, which was approved by the local authorities, they were warned by the Prosecutor about inadmissibility of their participation in the ‘extremist action’.
Board Meeting of the Center
On the 23rd of December, 2010 Russian Research Center for Human Rights will hold a Board Meeting with the aim to consider an application of a newly registered trans-regional organization Center of Caucasian Initiative with the request to integrate the organization into the Center.
HR organisations express concern with ineffective implementation of PACE resolution on N. Caucasus
International and Russian human rights organizations, including Human Rights Center Memorial, the Civil Rights Defenders and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee have sent a letter to the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe expressing concern with the lack of effective implementation of its resolution 1738 (2010) on Legal remedies for human rights defenders in North Caucasus.
Cooperation of psychiatrists and human rights defenders will be resumed
On the 13th of December Independent Psychiatric Association of the Russian Federation and Moscow Helsinki Group held a seminar ‘Human Rights and Psychiatry’ within the projects on the protection of people with mental disorders and prevention of tortures in closed establishments of the Russian Federation. More then 40 experts, representatives of regional NGOs visited the event.
