The Supreme Court should hear appeals against assembly bans. On 3 May 2007 the European Court of Human Rights pronounced a sentence in the case “Bączkowski and others v. Poland” (complaint no. 1543/06), concerning the ban put on the Warsaw Pride Parade in 2005.

On the 6th of March 2010 the President of Republic of Poland appointed a new Public Prosecutor General, who for the first time will be independent from the Ministry of Justice and will be elected in open and transparent elections.

‘War on Terror and Human Rights – In Search for Truth and Responsibility’

On December 14, 2010, a one day international conference entitled ‘War on Terror and Human Rights – In Search for Truth and Responsibility’ was held at the Warsaw University Law Faculty premises. The conference was organized by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR) in Warsaw under the auspices of the Dean of the Law Faculty of Warsaw University.

HIV and serving in the Police force – judgement of the Constitutional Tribunal

On 23 November 2009 the Constitutional Tribunal pronounced a judgement (ref. no. P 61/08) concerning a ban from serving in the Police force imposed on a person infected with HIV. The Tribunal found that the regulation which provides that HIV infection automatically makes any kind of service in the Police impossible is a disproportionate limitation of the constitutional right of access to the public service under equal conditions.

Were secret CIA detention facilities located in Poland?

On 22 February 2010 at 12 p.m. a press conference in The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (“HFHR”) premises called “Were secret CIA detention facilities located in Poland?” took place. It was organized due to new information that two human right groups – HFHR and The Open Society Justice Initiative (“OSJI”) – received from government agency that for the first time confirms the landing in the Republic of Poland of planes associated with the CIA’s secret detention program.

The right to critize – communication of the case Gąsior vs. Poland

On 5 January 2010 European Court of Human Rights communicated a case of Wanda Gąsior vs. Republic of Poland (no. 34472/07) to the Polish government. Gąsior alleged a breach of the article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights (freedom of expression). The application was prepared with help of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

Guardian: Poland admits role in CIA rendition programme

Warsaw air control service confirms that at least six CIA flights landed at disused military air base in northern Republic of Poland in 2003. The Polish authorities have for the first time admitted their involvement in the CIA’s secret programme for the rendition of high-level terrorist suspects from Iraq and Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, it emerged today.

Official flight logs released Monday confirm Republic of Poland hosted aircraft linked to a CIA program for secretly moving and holding terrorism suspects. It adds to the allegations that the country could have hosted a CIA prison.
