Tackling the Problems of the Health Care in Polish Prisons – New Project of HFHR

This month Helsinki Foundation For Human Rights began its new program addressing the issues of medical care in prisons. Within the frames of a Law Clinic, run by students and supervised by professionals, interventions are planned to be taken. The program will also include lectures and seminars, as well as strategic litigation.

ACLU: Counsel Calls On Polish Prosecutor To Investigate Torture Of Detainee At CIA Black Site

In response to the intervention to the pending Polish investigation on behalf of al-Nashiri, the American Civil Liberties Union called on the Obama administration to broaden its own investigation into the Bush-era torture program to include top-level U.S. government officials who may have known about and authorized such abuse.

Al-Nashiri, former prisoner of CIA facility in Poland intervene in Polish investigation

On 21 September 2010 lawyers intervened on behalf of Guantanamo prisoner Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri in a pending Polish investigation on CIA black sites, demanding the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for his illegal transfer, detention, and torture on Polish soil.

Insulting the Polish President – is it in conformity with the Constitution?

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights presented an amicus curiae legal brief in a case concerning the conformity of article 135 § 2 of penal code (ref. no. P 12/09) to the Polish Constitutional Tribunal. This regulation provides that insulting the President of the Republic of Poland in public is punishable by up to 3 years in prison.

Monitoring of Legislative Proceedings in the Field of Judicature – new Program of the HFHR

On 1 July 2010 the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights launched a two-year Program “Monitoring of Legislative Proceedings in the Field of Judicature”. The aim of the Program is to improve standards of law-making in the field of judicature (especially concerning human rights), but also create mechanisms allowing civil society organisations or other subjects to involve more effectively in the law-making process.

Lawyers from Azerbaijan with a study visit to the European Court of Human Rights

Between 14 and 16 September 2010, as part of the “Strategic Litigation in the South Caucasus” project supported by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee, a group of twenty four lawyers from Republic of Azerbaijan visited the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. One of the participants is an intern at Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

WASHINGTON – A former CIA officer accused of revving an electric drill near the head of an imprisoned terror suspect has returned to U.S. intelligence as a contractor, training CIA operatives after leaving the agency, The Associated Press has learned.

In the days of 29-31 August 2010 the Netherlands Helsinki Committee organized a Second Regional Meeting of three rights organization from Republic of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Republic of Armenia. The meeting was dedicated to the evaluation of the “Strategic Litigation in the South Caucasus” project.
