NDN takes stock on the current situation in the former Yugoslavia

On Thursday 13 September, in collaboration with the Nansen Dialogue Network (NDN) and the Norwegian Peace Alliance, the Norwegian Peace Association will organise a seminar on the current situation in Former Yugoslavia, with focus on the interethnic dialogue-work being done by the Nansen Dialogue Network in the region. HRH F joins AI in protest against Kazulin’s imprisonment

The Human Rights House Foundation has sent a protest letter to Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, addressing the continued detention of former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin. Kazulin was adopted as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International (AI) last December and included in AI´s most recent appeals campaign. For previous coverage on Kazulin´s case, click here . Norway must condemn arrests of peaceful activists in Burma

-More than 100 demonstrators are currently in prison for haing participated in the protests two weeks ago against the rise in fuel prices. We are disappointed that Norwegian authorities have not issued an official condemnation of these arrests, that violate the basic human rights of the Burmese people, says Inger Lise Husøy, right, the Director of the Norwegian Burma Committee (NBK). Study human rights, multi-cultural understanding and conflict management

The Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC) has developed a new part-time course, to commence late September in Drammen, the biggest city in Buskerud. The course will be an important addition to the syllabus at Høgskolen in Buskerud (HIBU), the only institution for academic learning in this part of Norway (26-AUG-07)

Burmese student leaders arrested. Norway must react

Key democracy campaigners and many other activists were arrested late last night in Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar). Min Ko Naing, right, the most well-known democracy campaigner in Burma after Aung San Suu Kyi, was among the arrested. -We fear for the security of the arrested, and that many more will be taken by the police, says Inger Lise Husøy, the Director of the Norwegian Burma Committee. Praise for documentary questioning Statoil’s business in Azerbaijan

The Norwegian documentary film maker Erling Borgen´s, right, latest output, ´In the shadow of Statoil,´ is receiving very positive reviews at the ongoing Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund. The film features footage brought to Borgen from contacts within the HRH Network from the crackdown of the demonstrations following the rigged 2003 elections in the Republic of Azerbaijan. HRH also helped facilitate some of Borgen´s meetings with human rights activists in Baku. (20-AUG-07)

Norway at War

Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has suddenly become the largest recipient of humanitarian & development assistance from Norway, and the host of the largest group of Norwegian soldiers deployed outside the country. This happens despite few historical ties and little interaction between our two countries. The Nansen Academy at Lillehammer is organizing a Dialogue Seminar where the participants will discuss the impact of civil and military operations in Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Kosovo/Serbia. Exile Tibetans want their own Olympic team

We will use the year between now and the 2008 Beijing Olympics to draw attention to the situation in Tibet, and we want a separate Tibetan team to compete in the games, says Chungdak Koren, right, Chairwoman of the Norwegian Tibet Committee, one of the organisations at the Human Rights House in Oslo. China purges Tibet gov’t of ethnic Tibetans

China is cracking down on pro-Dalai Lama (right) sentiment in Tibet by firing dozens of ethnic Tibetan officials and criticizing others who don´t speak out against the exiled spiritual leader, a rights group said Friday. Since July, Communist Party secretaries from 54 of Tibet´s 74 counties have been fired and replaced by cadres from elsewhere in the People´s Republic of China, Hong Kong´s Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said.
