Release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma
This was the demand when the Campaign Committee for Burma (Norway) and the Norwegian Burma Committee demonstrated in front of the Norwegian parliament today, right. The request to Norwegian authorities was to put pressure on the Burmese junta to release all the more than 100 human rights and democracy activists that have been arrested over the last month. Constitutional convention reinforces military rule in Burma
The conclusion of Burma’s National Convention on Monday shows that Burma’s military intends to ignore public sentiment and remain in power indefinitely, said Human Rights Watch today. “The end of the national convention heralds neither reform nor change in Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar),” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “It merely marks the end of a long, drawn-out chapter of faits accomplis designed by the military to stay in power.” (05-SEP-07)
NDN takes stock on the current situation in the former Yugoslavia
On Thursday 13 September, in collaboration with the Nansen Dialogue Network (NDN) and the Norwegian Peace Alliance, the Norwegian Peace Association will organise a seminar on the current situation in Former Yugoslavia, with focus on the interethnic dialogue-work being done by the Nansen Dialogue Network in the region. HRH F joins AI in protest against Kazulin’s imprisonment
The Human Rights House Foundation has sent a protest letter to Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, addressing the continued detention of former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin. Norway must condemn arrests of peaceful activists in Burma
-More than 100 demonstrators are currently in prison for haing participated in the protests two weeks ago against the rise in fuel prices. Burmese student leaders arrested. Norway must react
Key democracy campaigners and many other activists were arrested late last night in Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar). Min Ko Naing, right, the most well-known democracy campaigner in Burma after Aung San Suu Kyi, was among the arrested. -We fear for the security of the arrested, and that many more will be taken by the police, says Inger Lise Husøy, the Director of the Norwegian Burma Committee. Praise for documentary questioning Statoil’s business in Azerbaijan
The Norwegian documentary film maker Erling Borgen´s, right, latest output, ´In the shadow of Statoil,´ is receiving very positive reviews at the ongoing Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund. The film features footage brought to Borgen from contacts within the HRH Network from the crackdown of the demonstrations following the rigged 2003 elections in the Republic of Azerbaijan. HRH also helped facilitate some of Borgen´s meetings with human rights activists in Baku. (20-AUG-07)
